Character Information
Character Name: Monk Gyatso
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character History: Gyatso was an Air Nomad and was one of the five elder monks that ran the Southern Air Temple, one of the nation's four temples. Before that, he was like many young Air Nomad children, and had lived most of his young life at the same temple he now runs. Roku, the previous Avatar, master of all the elements and the one tasked with maintaining balance in the world, was sent to train at the temple when Gyatso was only a child. They became fast friends, and their friendship carried on to the life of the next Avatar.
Sometime after Roku's death, Gyatso was assigned guardian to young Aang, the new Avatar. As he was Aang's guardian, Gyatso was in charge of Aang's training in the art of airbending, helping him master airbending at a young age.
Due to rumors of war on the horizon, the elder monks told Aang of his role as Avatar when he was twelve, as opposed to the tradition age of sixteen. Gyatso did not agree with this decision and openly told Aang that he considered it a mistake. Gyatso believed it was important for Aang to have some freedom and fun, as he was a growing boy and had emotional needs.
However, one of the other elder monks felt that Aang's training was not progressing as it should. That elder monk brought his complaints to the head monk of the temple. It was determined that Gyatso's affection for Aang was clouding his judgment, and that Aang would be separated from him by taking him to another Air Temple to complete his training.
Aang overheard this plan and ran away on his flying bison. Gyatso was unaware that Aang heard, and later that night, he went to tell Aang that he wouldn't let the others take Aang away from him. When Gyatso knocked on Aang's door, it swung open to reveal the letter that Aang had left him. Right after reading it, Gyatso looked out the window in horror to see a terrible storm. He never saw Aang again, and does not know that Aang's Avatar State seals him away for 100 years. It is during this night that Gyatso will Wake, hearing something calling his name.
Sometime after Aang disappears, Sozin's Comet (not named that at the time) arrives, and greatly increases the strength of the firebenders of the Fire Nation. Fire Lord Sozin leads an army of Fire Nation Soldiers to eradicate all the airbenders of the world, leaving Aang as the last airbender. Every temple is attacked, and no man, woman, or child is spared. It only becomes known in the next series, the Legend of Korra, that some flying bison and lemurs manage to survive. Although Gyatso is killed, he manages to take many Fire Nation soldiers with him, even with their comet-increased strength.
Character Personality: Monk Gyatso is the type of old man one would want for a grandfather. He is gentle, nonjudgmental, loving, and kind; he also has with a quick wit, and like most airbenders, a good sense of humor. Gyatso also enjoys baking. Sometimes, he combines both baking and humor into one event, as it turns out his cakes splatter wonderfully on the heads of other monks.
Like the rest of his people, the Air Nomads, he is spiritual. Gyatso is one of the elder monks of the Southern Air Temple, and enjoys training and spending time with the children in his care, especially Aang. As an Air Nomad, he honors all life, is a strict vegetarian, and meditates multiple times a day. He will listen to the problems that anyone wishes to speak to him about. He is foreign to hate and is capable of great patience, rarely becoming angry.
Despite what the rest of his personality may suggest, Monk Gyatso also knows how to stand his ground. He can be stubbornly independent and will respectfully voice his opposition to anything he does not agree with. Gyatso is used to having some authority, and will exercise it when necessary, but he also knows restraint.
Monk Gyatso had been appointed Aang's guardian and treats Aang as both his son and equal. Gyatso knew that Aang could not be all work and no play, and would use his authority as Aang's guardian to veto others from taking up all of Aang's time with training. He also spent many hours playing Pai Sho, a strategy game, with Aang, mostly for fun but also to train his mind.
Despite the beacon of calm and patience that he is, even Gyatso has limits, and can break. When his people were massacred, it was Gyatso whom took many Firebenders with himself to the grave. An event that, thankfully, as not occurred in the moment that he Woke.
In short, Monk Gyatso is a teacher, a friend, a father, and monk... but he is also human.
Powers and Abilities: Like all Air Nomads, Monk Gyatso is an airbender, capable of controlling and creating air movements by a special style of martial arts. He is considered to be one of the greatest airbenders of his time, and although he is not as young as he used to be, he is still powerful. With the use of a glider, Gyatso can literally fly by controlling the flow of the air currents around him. Think of Gyatso as a mime, only the forces in the air actually exist.
Not only can he create air currents with his hands and feet, he can create them with his breath. The strength of his techniques can go from a gentle breeze to massive blasts of air capable of knocking others off their feet. Using Tenzin's strength as a reference, he can also likely create variously shaped vortexes of air, although nowhere near as powerful as a fully realized Avatar. Although older, he can still use his airbending to increase his agility and speed, allow him to jump far distances, but land softly with barely a sound, and run fast. While he can use his powers to blast outwards, he can also create suction to bring objects (and people) closer to him. He also can manipulate air to smack aside and deflect an incoming projectile.
Finally, Gyatso can use his airbending to amplify the sound of his voice (or instruments that he is using), which probably came in useful at times as a caretaker of an entire temple of mischievous boys.

Hmm... Yes, I believe this is--ah, yes! It is working now.
[Paper is shuffled as Gyatso sets his recording scroll down.]
Wakened of Nautilus, allow me the chance to introduce myself to you. I am Monk Gyatso of the Southern Air Temple, an Air Nomad and airbender. You may know of two other airbenders, Aang and Tenzin, whom have preceded me in Awakening. I am now the third, and I will be joining them at the temple. It is my pleasure to finally speak with all of you, my fellow Wakened, and I look forward to meeting you in person soon.
[He pauses for a moment.]
It seems I have forgotten how to 'lock' this note. I suppose it does not matter, even if it might mean we will get a few extra people at the dinner table... Tenzin, would you be so kind as to show me to store that you mentioned? I would also like to pick up some things for dinner, as I am missing the proper ingredients for dessert, and egg custard is one of Aang's favorites.
Third Person:
Tenzin was an enigma. While he was quite clearly an airbender, his parentage was also quite clearly both Air Nomad and Water Tribe. It was not something that Gyatso had heard of happening in his time, and even among Air Nomads, such a tryst would not stay secret for long. The color of his eyes, as well as the shape of his face, made it far too obvious where half of his origins lied. Tenzin wore the robes of a monk with the shawl of a child. Then there were Tenzin's airbending movements. They were more forceful, more direct, than what was normally taught. His training had obviously not been standard.
Yet for all these things, the man felt 'right'. Gyatso knew this much. Even with all the particular oddities, Tenzin was still spiritual. His heart was in the right place, and he was not a threat of any kind. There had been a desperate need for acceptance in Tenzin's eyes since the very moment that he and Gyatso had met. There was also something familiar about him that Gyatso couldn't quite grasp. Then there were the unfamiliar moments of spark that made him feel more... worldly. More like the rest of the world. Spiritual with a kick.
Yes, that was the proper way to describe it. Tenzin was not a bad man, and was in fact quite the opposite. He was a good man with many mysteries. Being mysterious did not necessarily mean suspicious, as Tenzin did not have the heart for that. Gyatso had grown strong at reading hearts like the other airbenders'--all the better to catch a child within a lie and help them speak the truth. Tenzin spoke false on his origins, but Gyatso knew it was for the right reasons. Someday, Gyatso would ask Tenzin his reasons, and Tenzin would tell them.
Today was not that day, however. The time was not right. A space between them still existed that was not yet ready to be crossed. The gap needed to close further before Gyatso could take a leap of faith.
Situations like these required patience, and many years of raising young boys into men had honed Gyatso's. The time would come. Until then, he would wait.
After all, in Nautilus, he had the rest of eternity, and it would be a shame if he did not take the chance to make Tenzin squirm.
